Viking Metal made it to the shores of the Ohio river on a cold November night in the year of our Lord 2022. Landing in the village of Cincinnati at the Andrew J Brady Music Center for a metal show of epic proportions featuring Cattle Decapitation, Obituary, Carcass and head liners Amon Amarth.

As the crowd prepared for the onslaught, a curtain covered the stage building the suspense of what was to come. The lights dimmed as Viking runes began to appear and dance across the covering joining together in the center resulting in a flash of light and flames. As the curtain fell to the ground, a huge horned helmet drum riser seemed to rise out of the stage with flaming eyes to the rhythmic beat of an army. The musical battle began with the anthem “Guardians of Asgaard” blowing the crowd back on its heels. Statues of ancient warriors, stood guard at the back of the stage watching over the crowd in menacing fashion as to intimidate all in attendance.

Smoke began to rise from the stage as a dew-covered battlefield awakens by the sun, the band wielded their instruments like seasoned Warriors over powering their enemies. Olavi Mikkonen and Johan Söderberg took a shredding guitar attack while Ted Lundström and Jocke Wallgren added the thundering rhythm section of bass and drums playing the first song off the new album, “Oden Owns You All”.

The crowd did something that I have never seen before with a mosh pit. It formed and had been active in full metal fashion, but changed with the song “Put Your Back into the Oar”. The “Mosh Pit” turned into an “Oar Pit” and the crowd began to row in unison as Hegg sang on. He called out to them to put their backs into the oar and they went wild as the song came to an end.

The show was like an epic quest from beginning to end with songs off the new album, “The Great Heathen Army”, and “Get in the Ring” to fan favorites “Raven’s Flight” and “Raise Your Horns”. If the adventure lands on your shores, do not hesitate to join in to the Viking celebration. You will not be disappointed.
